K. Ibura is a writer, painter, and traveler from New Orleans, Louisiana. The middle child of five, she grew up in a hardscrabble neighborhood with oak and fig trees, locusts and mosquitoes, cousins and neighbors. K. Ibura's work delves into spheres of human liberation, human connection, and evolution. She employs speculative fiction and creative nonfiction to take readers through mind-bending journeys into the transcendent, the mystical, and the fantastic.

Vol. 46, Novel Writing: A Marathon
Posted on 26 December 2004
Conversations with Writing Mentors Antioch University, Los Angeles, CA As unbelievable as it may seem, I am STILL in the race with this novel. It has been quite a long time. I have written three full drafts while in five different countries. I’ve been angry, optimistic, threatened, confronted, and exhausted by the process. I’ve had… »

Vol. 44, “Aboutness”
Posted on 21 July 2004
Los Angeles, CA I have begun my MFA program at Antioch University, Los Angeles. It is one of a handful of low-residency programs, which allow writers (and other students, I assume) to obtain degrees while maintaining their current lifestyle. In other words, you don’t have to “go away” to school. There’s no dorm life and… »

Vol. 43, Hiding Out
Posted on 17 May 2004
Brooklyn, NY Oh, the human being is a complex animal. We often work against our own best interests. We pray for our dreams to come true, yet we bow to fear as our god and keep ourselves in boxes because we don’t know what the terrain is like “out there.” If you, as an artist,… »

Vol. 42, The Value of Reading Publicly
Posted on 14 April 2004
Brooklyn, NY Recently a friend was writing an essay on the relationship between authors and public readings. “Why,” he asked, “is it important for writers to read their work?” It is an interesting question because writing—unlike the performing arts—doesn’t really need to be performed to be enjoyed by others. For dancers, actors, singers, and musicians,… »

Vol. 38, Crisis of Faith
Posted on 4 December 2003
New York Recently three people close to me were going through crises of faith. I believe crises of faith are intrinsic to artistic (and human) growth. Usually, a crisis is brought on when something is not the way we expected it to be. Your friend or partner shows her/himself to be completely different from who… »

Posted on 29 September 2003
My coworker was recently reading Stedman Graham’s Build Your Own Life Brand! She is eventually interested in opening her own day spa and found it helpful in the work she was doing. She passed it on to me and I’ve been finding it instructive in helping me focus my goals. Every time I mention I’m… »

Vol. 34, The Story of a Dissertation Journey
Posted on 17 July 2003
Brooklyn, New York and Baton Rouge, Louisiana It is mid-July and I am just sitting down to write the KIS.list for May and June. Motherhood certainly has something to do with it. I am not mentally engaged with writing in the same single-minded manner I had been before my daughter’s birth. Now, I have very… »

Vol. 30, Hype and Content
Posted on 23 January 2003
A Conversation with a Fellow Writer and a Visual Artist Brooklyn, NY A writer friend of mine was visiting and the topic of hype came up. He brought up a writer’s website he had recently visited. The website pissed him off because the writer claimed to have produced mountains of various types of work, but… »

Vol. 29, Keeping It Real
Posted on 24 November 2002
Thoughts on Artistic Expression I was recently, once again, in discussion with my father about the students in his high school video production workshop. He teaches one segment to a student body in an impoverished high school and another in a more privileged magnet school. He mentioned that his students at the poorer school had… »

Vol. 26, Editing: Going Within
Posted on 23 July 2002
Brooklyn, NY I am fascinated with the editing process. That should not come as a surprise as I am an editor and a copy editor as well as a writer. I look at the first draft of a story or an essay as a mass of raw material, a block of marble to be carved…. »
